Zimbabwe Constitution-Making Outreach: MPs’ Training Begins

Legislators from the three political parties in the Global Political Agreement yesterday convened a special caucus in Harare to equip themselves with skills and knowledge on what is expected of them during the outreach programme on constitution-making.

The outreach programme is expected to start on January 10 and end within 65 days.

Addressing a joint Press conference after the meeting, Zanu-PF chief Whip Cde Joram Gumbo said the purpose of the meeting was to brief MPs on the outline of the outreach programme.

"The meeting was meant to orient MPs about the outreach programme and to brief them on what they are expected to do during this programme.

"This is very imperative because MPs have a very important role to play in their areas during this programme," said Cde Gumbo.

He said the outreach consultation process was not a partisan programme, adding that people should express their views freely.

His MDC-T counterpart Mr Innocent Gonese, said the major business of the meeting was to get views of MPs on how the outreach programme should be conducted.

"What we intended to do was to have a buy-in and get suggestions from MPs on how the outreach programme should be conducted. The ideas we gathered from MPs were very constructive and we hope they will help us during this programme," said Mr Gonese.

The Parliamentary Select Committee would have a two-day training workshop of MPs starting today at the Harare International Conference Centre.

"Tomorrow (today) we are going to embark on our training programme so that Parliamentarians are fully conversant of what they are expected to do during the outreach programme," said Mr Gonese.

The training is also expected to discuss issues to do with tolerance and conflict resolution.

Mr Edward Mukhosi of MDC-M said it was important to meet the MPs before the outreach programme commenced because they were people of great influence in their constituencies.

"We decided to meet MPs first before the outreach programme because they have great influence in their respective areas of jurisdiction. We want them to appreciate the programme and urge their people to have tolerance during the outreach programme," said Mr Mukhosi.

The MPs workshop will be followed by the training of more people who would carry out the outreach programme across the country from the 7th to the 9th of January.

The outreach programme is expected to be completed before the Select Committee convenes the second All Stakeholders Conference provisionally scheduled for May.

The outreach programme follows the injection of funds by the Government and the United Nations Development Fund to kick-start the programme.
