A must see video: The impact of chess for one girl

The 8th annual Susan Polgar National Girls' Invitational will conclude today. The closing ceremony will take place at 1:30 pm in the Business School Rotunda. For the last 6 days, 46 of the brightest young ladies in the country were invited to come to Texas Tech to receive training, and to compete for scholarships, netbooks, and other cool prizes.

Each one of the participants has a story. But the video above tells the most powerful story. Without the Susan Polgar Foundation, TTU, FedEx, and so many generous individuals (including Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and so many others), some of these young girls would never have a chance.

What is BugHouse chess

What is bughouse chess? I wrote a great article about Bughouse chess back a few months ago. Bughouse is controversial amongst the chess community but like all things, a little bit of moderation is key, and I don't think it hurts your chess game. More importantly I think it gets kids into chess, teaches you about positional play and teamwork as well. I'm releasing these videos for fun and hope you all enjoy them. A BATTLE of epic proportions is taking place in Dandenong and it’s happening under all of our noses.

Pawns are being cut down in their prime as the kings and queens run scared on a giant rubber chess mat at Dandenong Plaza.

The black-and-white mat is a dream come true for those who find window shopping a chore.

“My wife does the shopping and I play chess,” Dumitru Cupsa told Leader after beating Hekruan Celo in a battle royal.

“Chess is not a game of luck - it’s a mind war.

“The deeper you think, the better you are. It’s like reading minds, you know his next move.”

The chess mat is quite easy to find; just look out for would-be shoppers huddled together pointing and shouting out tips - in any number of foreign tongues.

“We understand each other through chess,” Mr Cupsa said.

He first started playing chess when he was 14, working as a shepherd in Romania.

“It was by accident really ... a fellow friend brought a board to the field.

“He taught me how to move because his father played chess.

“I find it interesting and slowly, slowly started building some strategies and getting better.”

Mr Cupsa is a regular on the mat on level three of the shopping centre, outside Safeway.

“There are things you must achieve in life and among those very important things - getting married, building a house and planting a tree - is knowing how to play chess.

“It’s the best game in the world.”

Springvale South resident Rene Carrere was just a happy observer when Leader joined in the board game phenomenon.

“I don’t know much about chess,” Mr Carrere said.

“I am still learning, but I might build up the courage to play one day.”

William Steinitz vs Augustus Mongredien (1862) - Chess Video

Wilhelm Steinitz Vs Augustus Mongredien, 1862: Steinitz opens with e4, answered by Mongredien's Scandinavian Defense. Mongredien plays standard opening moves however he commits a serious inaccuracy with 11. ...Nd5?! and 12. ...exd5?! -- closing his own bishop's a8-h1 diagonal. Steinitz immediately lifts his rook with 13. Rf3 and sacrifices it with 16. Rxh7! -- demolishing the pawn cover in front of black's king with devastating effect. Steinitz plays one last finesse in his attack, 25. Bg5! to finish the game. A fantastic example of the Scandinavian Defense in a classic century game between 2 great players.

South African 19th seed FM van der Nat Nicholas P surprised every one when he defeated a much higher rated IM Grover Sahaj in a well fought game to take sole lead at the 2011 Commonwealth & South African Open Chess Championships the after 9th round.

Top seed GM Nigel Short, who drew in the 7th and 8th round played a technically superb game to beat IM Ringoir Tonguey to take his score to 7.5 points from 9 rounds. He is just half a point behind the leader.

Defending Champion Grandmaster Rajaram Laxman, playing with black against GM Jones Gawain, failed to convert his many advantages into a victory and agreed for a draw. IM Dronavalli Harika also settled for a draw and is on 7.5 points.

Abhijeet Kunte and GM Abhijeet Gupta played a short 17 moves game when the position got blocked and no one wanted to take risk by deviating from established game agreed to share the point.

GM Pablo Lafuente thrashed IM Prathmesh Mokal while IM Eesha Karwade after losing two games made a good recovery by winning game 8 and 9 to take her telly to seven points from 9 games. WGM Swati Ghate also won her game and is on 7 points. IM Tania Sachdev has to settle for a draw and is on 6.5 points.

At the end of round 9, FM van der Nat Nicholas P is leading the championship with 8 points followed by as many as six players half a point behind. In the penultimate round FM van der Nat Nicholas P will meet GM Pablo Lafuente who is on 7.5 points.

Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championships

Three Indians Dronavalli Harika, R R Laxman and Grover Sahaj join GM Gawain Jones in the leadership battle after round 8 of the 2011 Commonwealth & South African Open Chess Championships.

The best watched and sought after game of the championship was played between top seed GM Nigel Short and Championship leader GM Jones Gawain which finally ended in a draw. On other tables IM D Harika crushed South African IM Watu Kobese while GM Rajaram Laxman and IM Sahaj Grover came out victorious against their opponents and joined Gawain in the battle for the Championship.
