Penelitian ini juga menyebutkan, penumpukan plak di gigi suatu saat bisa hancur dan menyerang otak sehingga mengakibatkan stroke.

3. Infeksi saluran pernafasan

Berdasarkan studi di dalam Journal of Periondotology, jika kita menjaga mulut tetap bersih dan sehat, dapat membantu menjaga paru-paru terlindungi dengan baik. Hal ini kemungkinan bakteri yang disebabkan oleh penyakit periodontal akan menumpuk di tenggorokan bagian atas, dari sana ia akan mudah terhirup ke saluran pernapasan bagian bawah dan menghambatnya atau berkembang menjadi masalah paru-paru yang lebih serius.

4. Masalah saat kehamilan – akibat kesehatan gigi dan mulut buruk

Dapat dipastikan bahwa selama hamil adanya peningkatan aliran darah dan fluktuasi hormonal ke seluruh tubuh. Sehingga hal ini memungkinkan terjadinya perubahan pada gigi dan gusi. Sekitar 50 persen perempuan hamil mengembangkan gingivitis (kondisi gusi meradang, berdarah atu bengkak – American Academy of Periodontists). Kalau hal ini dibiarkan berlarut-larut dapat menyebabkan infeksi yang lebih serius dan bisa bermasalah pada kehamilan. Bahkan beberapa studi menyebutkan adanya hubungan langsung antara infeksi bakteri di mulut dengan preeklampsia, kelahiran prematur dan tingkat kelahiran rendah.
